Bijna alle archeologische vondsten die nu op de site worden gedaan, zijn gelinkt aan het begijnhof extra muros van Mechelen, dat rond 1370 werd gesticht. \u00a0Het was een levendige gemeenschap waar zo\u2019n 1200 begijntjes en 300 arbeiders woonden en werkten.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-margin-small\">Tijdens de recente archeologische opgravingen werden er fascinerende vondsten gedaan die een inkijkje geven in het leven van deze gemeenschap. De archeologen van ABO hebben de volgende ontdekkingen gedaan:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-margin-small\">&#8211; Resten van begijnhuisjes met vloeren<br\/>&#8211; Een bakstenen afvoersysteem, afgedekt met natuursteen<br\/>&#8211; Muurresten<br\/>&#8211; Een beerkelder met kannetjes en stukjes glas<br\/>&#8211; Grachten en resten van bruggetjes<br\/>&#8211; Afvalkuiltjes<br\/>&#8211; &#8230;<br\/><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/coresdevelopment.be\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Geschiedenis-van-Wattland-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15715\" style=\"width:739px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/coresdevelopment.be\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Geschiedenis-van-Wattland-2.png 640w, https:\/\/coresdevelopment.be\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Geschiedenis-van-Wattland-2-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"has-margin-small\">Daarnaast werden er ook brandlagen ontdekt, mogelijks kunnen deze gelinkt worden aan de eerste beeldenstorm in 1566 of de Tachtigjarige Oorlog. Tijdens deze periode verhuisden de begijntjes intra muros, en het stadsbestuur gaf het bevel om de site volledig af te branden uit angst dat de vijand het anders zou innemen.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-margin-small\">In de volgende fase willen de archeologen een beter beeld krijgen van de grenzen van het begijnhof en het dagelijks leven van de begijntjes, die grotendeels op zichzelf waren aangewezen. Wat deden ze precies binnen het begijnhof? Wat aten ze? Wat stond er in hun moestuin?
