Mechelen to get new, quiet city boulevard

Monday 13th January, the city of Mechelen will begin work on the N16 / Keerdoklaan. This stretch, between the intersection of Elektriciteitsstraat and the junction with Antwerpsesteenweg, will be transformed into a new city boulevard.

The redesign of the central reservation will start with the removal of the crash barriers and the lowering of the existing green strip to encourage natural water management. This will allow rainwater to soak into the ground more effectively, rather than running off into the drainage system. The plans also include additional planting, featuring native tree species that naturally thrive in the area. As a result, Wattland, along the side of Keerdoklaan, will benefit from around 100 new trees, significantly enhancing the green space.

putting safety first

On the side where traffic leaves the city, the hard shoulder and crash barriers will be replaced with a green verge, trees, a 3-metre wide two-way cycle lane, and a safety strip with hedging between the cycle lane and the road to improve cyclist safety.

On the side where traffic enters the city, a wide cycle lane will be created alongside a new green strip. The buffer canal will remain in place, as it plays an important role in collecting rainwater and promoting water infiltration.
