Wattland-project
Nature as inspiration
Wattland is a collection of residential buildings where experiencing nature takes centre stage. It includes high-quality apartments with one, two or three bedrooms, luxurious penthouses and homes with three or four bedrooms, alongside co-living units. Spacious terraces offer sublime views of the green inner gardens, the water of the Dijle and the magnificent St Rumbold’s Cathedral.
Three renowned firms contributed to Wattland’s architecture: HUB Architecture & Urbanism developed the master plan, supported by Bontinck Architecture & Engineering and dmvA architecten for the residential building designs.
The starting point for the architecture is the site’s open space. The abundant greenery, both in the wetlands and along the city boulevard, defines the identity of this new neighbourhood.
The street-facing apartments feature light grey tones and concrete elements. Towards the wetlands, the façades include green accents, reflecting the site’s urban and natural character.
In Wattland, greenery is much more than a visual enhancement. The new neighbourhood square and the playfully undulating inner gardens form the beating heart of the new community and encourage local social life.
The inspiration for the design of the inner gardens came from the site’s history: the beguinage. Much like in the times of the beguines, this outdoor space buzzes with activity and serves as an attractive extension of the homes for residents in the area.
Wattland excels in sustainability. The project avoids fossil fuels entirely and is fully reliant on renewable energy, which benefits both the planet and your energy costs.
The buildings are heated and passively cooled through a shared geothermal heat pump (BTES system). In addition, all primary rooftops are equipped with solar panels.
Wattland stands out as a climate-adaptive project. It contributes to the city’s bio-climate, is resistant to heat stress and is well-suited to handle rainfall peaks. Permeable surfaces play a vital role in this effort. Parking facilities are located underground, allowing the green zones on the surface to remain unpaved and promoting natural water infiltration.
Rainwater from rooftops and terraces is stored in rainwater tanks and reused for purposes such as flushing toilets and maintenance taps.
The apartments are finished to impeccable standards, including high-quality kitchens and bathrooms. Special attention is paid to the connection with the green surroundings through large windows, ensuring maximum enjoyment of the natural environment. In other words, your living comfort is 100% guaranteed here.
Wattland even includes a dedicated fitness room for residents. How convenient is that? It eliminates the need to travel to a gym, leaving you with no excuses not to work out!
Shared living with privacy
More and more people are looking for ways to share their living spaces. The social and communal aspects of co-living are particularly appealing, along with the financial advantages it offers. Wattland responds to this demand by providing spacious duplex units with three or four bedrooms, each equipped with a private bathroom. This setup is ideal for those who value their privacy but don’t want to live alone.
Residents of the co-living apartments also have exclusive access to a large shared rooftop terrace, perfect for relaxing and socialising.
